YouTube Aspect Ratio

The YouTube aspect ratio is 16:9 for the standard player and 9:16 for Shorts. Choosing between them before you shoot decides where your video can appear.

The two ratios that matter

16:9 horizontal is the native shape of the YouTube player. A 1920 × 1080 upload fills it edge to edge with no padding.

9:16 vertical is the Shorts shape. A 1080 × 1920 upload under three minutes gets the full-screen vertical player.

Anything else is letterboxed: bars at the sides for 4:3 or 1:1, bars above and below for a wide cinematic crop.

Why the ratio decides your reach

The YouTube aspect ratio is not only a framing choice — it routes your video to a different surface. Horizontal videos live in search, suggested and subscriptions. Vertical videos under three minutes go into the Shorts feed.

Uploading a vertical video as a standard 16:9 file with padded sides forfeits the Shorts feed entirely, which is usually the opposite of what the creator intended.

Shooting once for both ratios

If you need horizontal and vertical from a single take, shoot 16:9 and frame your subject centrally with generous headroom. A 9:16 crop from the middle then works without cutting off heads.

Full dimensions for every resolution are on the size of videos on YouTube page.

YouTube Aspect Ratio FAQ

What happens if I upload the wrong aspect ratio?

YouTube pads it rather than cropping. Your video still plays, but with black bars and a smaller image on screen.

Is 4:5 supported on YouTube?

It plays, but it is padded on both sides in the standard player and is not treated as a Short. Stick to 16:9 or 9:16.
