Camera technology explained in the terms that actually change your footage: sensors, autofocus, stabilisation and codecs, and which of them you can ignore.

Sensors: what size really buys you

A larger sensor gathers more light per pixel, which means cleaner images in dim rooms and easier background blur. That is the whole benefit, and it is real.

What it does not buy is sharpness, colour accuracy or good footage in bad light. A smaller sensor in a well-lit room beats a large one in a dark one, every time.

Autofocus is the spec that decides usable takes

For anyone filming themselves, continuous eye-detection autofocus matters more than any other feature in modern camera technology. A soft take is unusable no matter what sensor produced it.

Phase-detection systems track faces reliably; older contrast-detection systems hunt back and forth, which is visible and unfixable in post.

Stabilisation, codecs and bit depth

  • In-body stabilisation matters if you walk while filming. Seated, a tripod does it better and for free.
  • Codec decides file size and how much your footage survives editing. H.264 is universal; H.265 halves the size and costs you CPU.
  • 10-bit colour gives grading headroom. If you are not colour grading, it is storage you are paying for.

Is newer camera technology always better?

For autofocus, generally yes — it has improved dramatically. For sensors and lenses, a five-year-old model is often indistinguishable in normal use.

Does megapixel count matter for video?

Barely. 4K needs about 8 megapixels. Beyond that, extra resolution mainly helps if you crop or reframe.
