What autocue and camera prompter mean

Autocue is a brand name that became a generic term, in the same way people say “hoover” for a vacuum. An autocue teleprompter and a teleprompter are the same thing: a screen that scrolls your script while you look towards the lens.

A camera prompter adds a beam-splitter mirror mounted in front of the lens, so the text appears to float exactly where the camera is pointing. It gives the cleanest eyeline, at the cost of hardware. A clear teleprompter on a screen beside the lens gets you most of the way there for nothing.

Scrolling lyrics behave differently from a spoken script. Lines are shorter, repeats are frequent, and the pace is set by the music rather than by you.

Slow the scroll speed down, raise the font size so a whole line is readable at a glance, and break verses onto separate lines rather than letting them wrap. A lyric teleprompter works best when each line lands as a single visual unit.
