Speech training in the Toastmasters tradition points at roughly 125 to 150 words per minute. It is slower than everyday conversation on purpose: an audience has no way to ask you to repeat yourself.

At that pace a five-minute speech runs between 625 and 750 words, and a seven-minute speech between 875 and 1,050.

Why timed speeches make pace unavoidable

Toastmasters speeches are timed, with signals at the green, amber and red marks. That structure turns pace from a stylistic question into a practical one: run long and you are disqualified from the evaluation.

Pace as a tool rather than a constant

Evaluators respond to variation. A story told slightly faster, a key line delivered slowly, a full pause before the turn — these read as control, and a metronomic delivery does not.

Practise the pauses explicitly. Most speakers under-pause by a large margin, because silence feels far longer to the speaker than to the room.
