Why an iPad teleprompter works so well

An iPad hits the sweet spot for prompting. The screen is large enough to hold a full line of text at a readable size, and small enough to sit beside or under a camera without dominating the frame.

That combination is why an iPad teleprompter is the standard choice for seated pieces to camera, interviews and course recording.

Setting it up

1. Open the autocue teleprompter in Safari on your iPad.
2. Paste the script and set the font large enough to read from where you sit.
3. Position the iPad directly under the lens, as close as the mount allows.
4. Lock rotation so the layout does not flip mid-take.
5. Set scroll speed to your natural pace, then rehearse once before recording.

Mounted in a beam-splitter rig, the iPad sits horizontally under angled glass and its reflection appears directly over the lens. Your eyeline becomes exact rather than nearly right.

This is the setup broadcast uses. It needs mirrored text, because the image is reflected before it reaches your eye. Reading directly from the screen needs no mirroring.

Reading without looking like you are reading

Slow the scroll below your comfortable reading speed. Prompter text that moves slightly too slowly forces you to speak naturally; text that moves too fast makes your eyes track visibly.

Keep the active line in the top third of the screen, and sit far enough back that the angle between your eyes and the lens stays small.
