How to calculate speaking speed

Paste the exact script you read and enter the time it took. You can also use the built-in stopwatch while you practice. The calculator divides the number of words by the total duration in minutes.

Words per minute = word count ÷ speaking time in minutes. For example, 300 words delivered in two minutes equals 150 WPM.

What is a typical conversational speech rate?

There is no single correct speed. Research shows that speaking rate changes with the speaker, language, setting, pauses, and purpose. A study indexed by PubMed describes approximately 130–190 WPM as an average speaking range for its comprehension experiment. Use that as context, not a score you have to reach.

Researchers also distinguish speaking rate from articulation rate: speaking rate normally includes pauses. That is why this calculator uses the complete time of your delivery. See the speech-rate study and a recent measurement methodology paper.

Measure a useful WPM for your teleprompter

1. Use the same script and delivery style you plan to record.
2. Start the timer, read naturally, then stop it after the last word.
3. Repeat the test once or twice.
4. Use your result in the script timer to estimate future scripts.

A slower result is not a failure. Tutorials, technical explanations, stories, and calls to action all need different pacing.

Average speaking rate in words per minute, by format

There is no single correct speed. The rate that works depends on what you are recording and who is listening.

• Conversation: roughly 140–160 wpm. This is the everyday pace most people fall into without thinking about it.
• Presentation or keynote: roughly 120–150 wpm. A slower average speaking rate in words per minute gives an audience room to follow an argument.
• Toastmasters and speech contests: around 125–150 wpm is the range usually taught, because judges reward clarity over speed.
• Podcast or narration: roughly 150–160 wpm, close to conversation.
• Audiobook: roughly 150 wpm, the pace most publishers ask for.
• Short-form video: often 170 wpm or more, because the format rewards density — but this is the easiest place to lose people.

Measure yourself against the format you actually record, not against an average.

How many words is a 10 minute speech?

Multiply your own measured speed by the number of minutes. At 130 wpm a ten-minute speech is about 1,300 words; at 150 wpm it is about 1,500. The table below uses 130 wpm, a realistic presentation pace.

• 2 minutes — about 260 words
• 3 minutes — about 390 words
• 5 minutes — about 650 words
• 10 minutes — about 1,300 words
• 20 minutes — about 2,600 words

These are starting points. Once you have your own number from the calculator above, your estimates stop being generic and start matching how you actually speak.

Use it as a speaking time estimator

The calculation works in both directions. Measure your speed once, then use it as a speaking time estimator for every script that follows: divide your word count by your words per minute to get the runtime.
